Helium leak detection
Enabling the efficient production of leak tight products.
Leak detection: essential to many demanding applications
Leak testing is a commonly used method in many industries. It is used both to control the quality:
- of production equipment
- and/or of the manufactured product.
One of the most accurate technical solution is Helium leak testing.
Why Helium as a tracer gas?
Helium is a non-toxic, inert, non-condensable and non-flammable gas. Helium is also normally only present in the atmosphere with a concentration of 5 ppm.
Because of its small atomic size, helium easily passes through small leaks.
Moreover, helium is:
- Relatively inexpensive,
- Available anywhere around the globe
- Easy to source from the many well-known gas production companies
For all those reasons helium has become the main tracer gas to find small leaks.
Helium Leak Detection: the most commonly used test method.
From consumer goods to automotive parts, for pharma and medical devices manufacturers, for packaging, Lithium-Ion Battery production or semiconductor producers: all use helium to detect leaks.
At Leybold we are specialized in supporting your needs:
- With over 30 years of experience in both the development and manufacturing of specialized vacuum pumps we support system builders
- Our PHOENIX family of helium leak detectors offers a complete portfolio combining portable, handheld or mobile solutions.
- We can also partner with you to define customized solutions to fully match the specific requirements of your industry.
Proud to be one of the largest partner for system builders around the globe.
Many of them rely on our oil sealed or dry vacuum pumps. Thanks to our long-standing experience we have developed many of our vacuum pumps to match the specific needs of system builders.
We are for instance focusing on new technologies such as Fuel Cell and Lithium-Ion Battery production, amongst others.
The oil sealed standard: our TRIVAC rotary vane vacuum pumps series.
These 2-stage rotary vane pumps are available from 4 m³/h up to 90 m³/h.
Learn more about the TRIVAC B pumps.
Several dry vacuum pump alternatives:
- The SCROLLVAC plus series of oil-free scroll pumps is available in the suction speed range between 3 m³/h up to 18 m³/h
- The ECODRY plus series of multi stage roots pumps ranges from 25 m³/h up to 65 m³/h
- The VARODRY series of compact screw pumps is available to those requiring pumping speeds from 65 m³/h and up to 200 m³/h.
When your leak detection systems require the fast evacuation of bigger volumes:
We can help you out and supply different solutions that will support this specific requirement. for example:
- We can supply combinations of RUVAC roots blowers together with SOGEVAC oil-sealed single-stage rotary-vane pumps or DRYVAC dry screw pumps.
- If lower pressures in a leak testing system are required: the TURBOVAC family of turbomolecular vacuum pumps (turbopumps) is perfect alternative with a complete range of high vacuum pumps.
A complete range of Helium Leak Detectors
PHOENIX Quadro and PHOENIX Vario portable leak detectors
Both the PHOENIX Quadro or Vario are based on a mass spectrometer to be operated in high vacuum. They are suitable for detecting leaks:
- Down to 5×10-12mbar l/s in vacuum mode
- Down to 1×10-6 mbar l/s in sniffer mode
PHOENIX MOBILIS Ultra: handheld leak detectors
A robust and reliable leak detector which works under atmospheric pressure with the Micro thermal conductivity detector (MTCD) technology.
PHOENIX Cart system: mobile, fully assembled and 'ready to start' leak detectors
The Cart system includes: the leak detector together with additional pumps, valves and fittings
You can customize your PHOENIX Cart with additional options and we deliver it immediately ready to operate.
