Leybold SCROLLVAC 3 plus Tip Seal Replacement

Regular maintenance is important to keep your vacuum pump performing well. Changing the tip seal is key to obtaining a good vacuum level and seal for you Leybold SCROLLVAC vacuum pump. 

On this page we will tell you everything you need to know when changing the tip seal on your pump. We will discuss how to remove, replace and reassemble the fan cover, end cover, end plate, orbit scroll, and orbit scroll tip seal. 

For this service you will need:

1. Pliers
2. Flat screwdriver
3. T20-T25 screwdriver
4. Plastic tip seal removal tool
5. Allen key set
6. Tip seal kit: GK7440001

Before you begin service

Remember to follow all safety recommendations when completing this service. Turn off the vacuum pump and leave it to cool for at least one hour before beginning service. This ensures that the vacuum pump is a cool enough temperature to handle and service. 

Part one: how to remove the fan cover.

  1. Begin by unscrewing the bolt at the side of the pump with a T20 screwdriver.

  2. Remove the bolt. The fan cover can now also be removed. 

Part two: how to remove the end cover and the end plate.

  1. Unscrew the four bolts holding the end cover in place with a 4mm allen key. The end cover can now be removed.

  2. Then, using a T20 screwdriver, unscrew and remove the three bolts holding the cover plate in place.

  3. Hold the fan to prevent it from spinning, while using a T20 screwdriver to unscrew and remove the counterbalance.

Part three: how to remove the orbit scroll

  1. Place the fan cover back on the vacuum pump.

  2. Set the pump upright and use a T20 screwdriver to unscrew the four bolts holding the orbit scroll in place.

  3. Remove the orbit scroll and anti-rotation assembly.

Part four: how to remove the orbit scroll seal

  1. Use a flat-headed screwdriver to gently remove the face seal of the orbit scroll. 

  2. The face seal can be disposed of.

Part five: how to remove the orbit scroll tip seal.

  1. Using the soft removal tool, from the out ring guide the orbit scroll seat out of the grooves.
  2. When completed, the seal can be disposed of. 
  3. Clean the orbit scroll with isopropanol and a lint free cloth.

Part six: how to replace an orbit scroll seal.

When replacing any parts on your vacuum pump, make sure to use genuine, high quality spare parts. We recommend Leybold spare parts, which you can find on our webshop: LINK

  1. Put the face seal back into place. Make sure when doing so that it is centered.

  2. Now press the face seal to position using the inner diameter.

Part seven: how to replace an orbit scroll tip seal.

  1. Begin by cleaning the bur at the starting tip of the tip seal. 

  2. Now, slowly insert the tip seal, starting from the center of the vacuum, working your way outwards. 

  3. Cut the tip seal 5mm before the end. 

Part eight: how to replace a fixed scroll tip seal.

  1. Start by using the plastic tip seal removal tool to guide the end portion of the seal out of the grooves. 
  2. Once removed, clean the fixed scroll with isopropanol and a lint-free cloth. 

  3. The whole tip seal length is approximately 1876mm.

  4. Cut the tip seal into two, with one length 239mm, and the other 1605mm. 

  5. Insert both into the seal, starting with the center portion. Cut the extra tip seal 5mm before the end.

Part nine: how to put together an orbit scroll

  1. Put the orbit scroll and anti-rotation assembly back into place on the vacuum pump. 

  2. Secure it into place using 4 screws, which can be tightened with a T20 screwdriver and a torque setting of 2.5 Nm. 

Part ten: how to assemble the end cover and end plate of a scroll vacuum pump.

  1. First, assemble the counterbalance. Make sure to hold the shaft using a slip joint plier to prevent it from spinning. Use a torque setting of 4.5 Nm when completing this step. 
  2. Next, assemble the O-ring. 

  3. Now the end plate can be secured in place, using a torque setting of 2.5 Nm. 

  4. Attach the next O-ring. 

  5. Lastly, the end cover can now be added, using an allen key and a torque setting of 2.5 Nm.

Part eleven: how to assemble a fan cover on a scroll vacuum pump.

  1. Attach the cover fan to the vacuum pump using a T20 screwdriver and a torque setting of 2.5 Nm.
