In microelectronics, solar technology, surface coating and metallurgy, many of the production processes take place under vacuum conditions. In order to manage these processes in a safe manner, knowledge about the basics and principles of vacuum creation and measurement are required. For many surface analysis methods and in the elementary particle research, vacuum is a prerequisite.

    Seminar goal: The purpose of this seminar is to provide you with the basics and principles of vacuum technology to help you understand the processes in your vacuum system in a qualitative and quantitative way.


    • Physical and vacuum technology
       - Definitions, units, calculations
       - Vapor, vapor pressure, desorption
       - Flow types, pump down times, conductances
    • Design and operation principle of vacuum pumps:
      - Fore vacuum pumps: rotary vane pumps, roots pumps (Roots blowers),scroll and screw pump
      - High vacuum pumps: Turbo molecular pumps, oil diffusion and cryopumps
      - Pump systems
    • Connection elements in vacuum technology
    • Introduction in total pressure measurement for the pressure range 1000 to 10-12 mbar
    • Leak detection 
      - leak detection methods and practical examples

    The seminar presents theory and experiment by means of practical experiments, cutting models, videos and operational pumps and components.
