Flywheels for energy storage rotate in a vacuum in order to keep the loss of momentum through resistance as low as possible. Flywheels of various sizes are used, depending on the amount of energy generated. Leybold offers suitable pumps and pump systems for this purpose.
In order to ensure the long-lasting stability of the flywheel chamber with regard to the required vacuum pressure, flywheels are tested for tightness. A leak in the chamber has a considerable negative effect on the lifespan and operation of the flywheel. Using PHOENIX leak detectors, the flywheel chambers can be easily, quickly and very efficiently checked for leaks. The sniffer method also allows for the exact localization of leaks.
