The mission of this role is the effective management and prosecution of a substantial portion of the Vacuum Technique patent portfolio. Clear understanding of the technical activities and business requirements/drivers will be built to ensure that our IP portfolio enhances and supports the changing needs of the business area.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the prosecution of DE, WO and EP patent applications at German Patent and Trade Mark Office and European Patent Office for a sector of the business
  • Support global Vacuum Technique business area with all matters pertaining to IP, including support for businesses having IP originating from US, European and Asian teams
  • Manage a large workload of drafting and prosecuting patent applications, taking a pragmatic approach to make sure the business needs are met.  Working with external resources where necessary (to budget)
  • Working closely with technologists, primarily in DE sites, and other IP practitioners in the business area, to ensure effective and consistent approach to IP across Vacuum Technique
  • Increasingly, advise business on commercial matters that require IP considerations, such as third-party IP rights, infringement opinions, alternative designs, marketing and sales issues, licensing technology, non-disclosure agreements, and so on
  • Support IP department activities with R&D function, including invention harvesting, engineering design reviews, portfolio reviews, developing and delivering training materials, assessing patent applications of both Vacuum Technique and third-parties to determine impact thereof (including product clearance activities), assist with EPO oppositions if appropriate
  • Advise on copyright, designs and trade mark matters

We expect

  • First accredited degree in appropriate engineering/scientific field; qualified European Patent
    Attorney; qualified German Patent Attorney
  • 3-5 Years PQE preferable prosecuting, DE, EP and PCT applications.
  • Understanding of global IP issues including Asian jurisdictions (China, Korea and Japan in particular) would be beneficial
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken
  • Self-management and good organisation skills are of paramount importance
  • Communication  - clearly and effectively both verbally and in correspondance with different levels of the business and external parties
  • Good analytical skills, able to structure and prioritize tasks
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
  • Willingness to travel abroad
