Coating

Surface coating is an indispensable part of modern product manufacturing.

From wear protection on mechanical components to the coating of optical components and the metallization of plastic surfaces, these processes take place under vacuum conditions. 

Coatings are used to enhance the properties of the coated materials. Examples are architectural glass (thermal insulation and/or protection against the sun’s rays), eyeglass lenses (prevent glare or scratching), laser mirrors (intensify the reflection of light or radiation) or tools (prevent wear). None of these examples would be possible without vacuum technology and specially designed vacuum components. 

Based on many years of experience, Leybold offers the optimal and proven solutions for both batch and inline systems. The products are optimized for the special circumstances and requirements of coating processes, such as particle accumulation, high gas throughput and fast pump-out times. In addition to the diffusion, cryogenic and turbomolecular pumps for high vacuum generation, we offer dry and oil-lubricated backing vacuum systems, as well as vacuum gauges, leak detectors, valves and components. With the help of simulation programs we support the design of even complex systems.

  • Optical Coatings

    Optical coatings improve the reflective behavior or transmission properties of optical systems such as filters, lenses, spectacle lenses or mirrors. Typical is a combination of many thin layers, to create different reflection characteristics or for conductive layers. They are usually applied by sputtering or evaporation processes and take place under high vacuum conditions. Typical high vacuum pumps are oil diffusion pumps, mechanical or magnetic bearing turbomolecular pumps as well as cryogenic pumps. Depending on the size of the vacuum system, the backing pumps can be oil-lubricated rotary vane pumps or dry compressing vacuum pumps, often in combination with Roots pumps. In addition to this pump program, Leybold offers also all needd accessories like vacuum gauges, compoments, valves and leak detectors.

  • Architectural glass coating and car glass

    Energy savings in buildings are achieved, among other things, by applying thin layers to window glass. In summer they protect against solar radiation in buildings, as well as in automobiles, and in winter they provide  thermal insulation. The layers are usually applied by sputter processes and take place under high vacuum conditions. Typical high vacuum pumps are oil diffusion pumps or turbomolecular pumps. Depending on the size of the vacuum system, the backing pumps can be oil-lubricated rotary vane pumps or dry vacuum pumps, often in combination with Roots pumps.   • Wear protection and decorative coatings

    Energy savings for automobiles are achieved, among other things, by reducing friction and replacing metal parts with plastic components. Thin layers reduce friction losses and improve the appearance of plastic parts.  Resistant thin layers are also used e.g. to protect against corrosion or to increase the service life of tools.   • Film coating

    Film coatings find a wide field of application in the packaging and pharmaceutical industry. An increasing market is the coating of flexible substrates for electronics, display technology and photovoltaics.
